Family Stories Month is here and it is a perfect time with Thanksgiving right around the corner. This is the time to share your family history with your children and family as well as to learn about your ancestral roots from those who will know them the best, your family. Genealogy is a favorite past-time for many and with the Internet now having more and more information and genealogical sites where users can input their family history as well, it is becoming easier to find information about those in our past and offers a chance to see where we came from.

The Book It! Reading Incentive Program is a great way to motivate kids to read with praise, recognition, and pizza. The program was created in 1985 and currently has about 10 million students enrolled every year. The program runs every school year from October 1st to March 31st. The teacher has the option to set a reading goal for each child in the class or home. The website also offers the chance to download tracking charts and other reproducible products that can be used to help keep everyone on track and motivated. When the child has met their monthly goal, you reward them with a Reading Award Certificate.  Goals can be based on the number of books, chapters, pages, or number of minutes spent. It is all up to the teacher and how they wish to set the goals.

Pizza Hut also congratulates every child for meeting their reading goals by rewarding them with a free one-topping personal pan pizza each month.

We took advantage of this program last year and it not only gave our kids extra motivation to read but it gave us a nice family night out to talk, laugh, and share some special times together. Take advantage of this great tool and encourage your kids to read as well as spend some family time together at dinner as a reward! The 2011 enrollment period has ended but there are still available slots being given out on a first come first serve basis.
